This device won’t drown out all noises, as a fan or an air-conditioner would. You’ll probably still hear garbage trucks, birds, and other morning disturbances. A snoring sleeping partner? That depends.

But it will filter out lighter house noises, such as doors closing, toilets flushing, and creaky heating and ventilation systems.

It also has a soothing analog sound which I like, and a cool retro design. And its compact size makes it very easy to travel with. There is something to be said about a product still on the market that has basically been unchanged for almost 50 years.

But it could use one more power setting that’s a bit louder so it can filter out more noises.

After reading many of the great reviews, I bought this product and am very happy I did. I live near a major highway and railroad. I’ve used a window fan for white noise but found the inconsistent noise to be a nuisance so I started wearing ear plugs at night but was concerned I couldn’t hear the kids in case of an emergency. The SleepMate has been a real blessing – I no longer wear the ear plugs, I get a great night’s sleep and can even sleep in later in the morning with the soothing sound. There are two settings, I’ve only used the lower setting so far. The sound is like a fan type sound but it’s not variable sound waves like a fan. It masks the sounds of the tractor trailers on the highway and the train at 3 a.m. along with local sounds in the early morning like the garbage truck and kids. I place it between my bed and the windows where the noise comes from. It doesn’t block out every noise completely, but it takes the edge off all these noises enough that they don’t wake me and it does block out some noises completely. It’s a great product.
